China
Since the 1960s the Salesians of Don Bosco in the province of Hong Kong have taken care of marginalized people affected by Hansen’s disease (HD). During the years, our mission developed in different stages. The project for the rehabilitation of people affected by HD started 10 years ago in the region of Guangdong, in the village of Ya Xi. When we started we exclusively treated ulcers due to leprosy. At the present, we provide medical and social rehabilitation of people suffering from HD. More specifically, the treatment of ulcers, general medical care service, amputation service, orthopedic service through special protective footwear and prostheses, eye care service, training for all those working in this field, first of all the staff of the Salesian mission.
Our style of work is to live together with these people. We have seen in recent years the effectiveness of such a choice. Our Mission is a living testimony that leprosy is not a fearful disease. Our team is composed by religious, consecrated lay people, and Chinese lay volunteers (professional nurses).
Throughout the years many people have benefited from our services, people who have spent most of their lives in suffering and difficulty. Surely it makes us happy to know that their lives are changed for the better with the help of your loyal generosity.
